Sean Taylor Shot

This week’s blog is on the shooting of Sean Taylor. Sean Taylor was shot Monday morning in his Miami, Florida home. Taylor was home this Sunday and Monday resting his football injury he sustained a couple weeks ago. Sean Taylor is the pro bowl safety for the Washington Redskins, and the skins have desperately missed him the last two games of the season. As huge fan of the Redskins I created this blog because that is all I saw on TV today, and I wanted to express my feelings on the situation.

This is a true tragedy that Taylor was shot in his own home in front of his wife. The pro bowler was shot in the leg and groin area. He lost a lot of blood and was unconsious after surgery. I’m sure that the Redskin family is truly upset about this incident. I have been fan of the team for as long as I can remember, and I have watched Taylor play the past four years in Washington. As a fan, I feel like I kind of know him. My prayers are with the Taylor family, and I hope that he is able to fully recover to the football field. He is so young and his potential is endless.

My Enlightenment for the Week

This week in my religion class at Villa Julie College I had one of those break through moments. I had one of those moments where you learn something that you feel you should already have known. This week in religion class I learned that Christmas was actually scheduled around a pagan holiday. The Christmas season was scheduled around this holiday in order to not go against the majority of people who celebrated at this time. This was a new piece of information to me, unless I had completely forgotten about it.

I went to a Catholic high school and middle school, and I felt like I must have fallen asleep all through those years. I would insist that all students take a religion class in college, because so many cultures are affected by religion every day. I don’t even know why my religion’s holidays are scheduled the way they are. What else am I ignorant to? Maybe education is the key to peace in society. If everyone understood more about each other’s cultures then maybe we could actually work things out through actions, other than violence. Maybe feeling completely stupid about my own religion has made me eager to learn, but I feel that I am a better person because of my religion class. Confucius felt that education was the key to a good citizen. Maybe he was right. I learned that in religion class too. Sorry, now I’m just showing off.

Getting Into the Halloween Mood

This week my blog will be focused on a travel website created by the Discovery Channel. The website's address for any future viewers is http://travel.discovery.com. The website in general is about traveling and where the premier sites are. The website is a good place to get ideas about vacations. The part of this site that caught my eye was World's Creepiest Destinations. Since Halloween is coming up it just seemed like the perfect article to read about. The section ranks the top ten creepiest destinations and creates links to read more about each individual destination.

The top six out of ten destinations ranked by the site were Gettysburg, New Orleans, Salem, Roswell, Winchester Mystery House, and Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast. The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast was the home the Borden family in Massachusetts. The father and wife of this family were brutally murdered by an axe murderer. The town is convinced that the two were killed by their younger daughter. Visitors can visit the crime scene and take tours. This website is really good at giving viewers numerous options of destinations. The site gives places for any type of trip and any type traveler. I would definitely visit this site again when I have enough money to travel.

Who Needs a Doctor When You Have a Computer?

This week I browsed through an informative website called The Sports’ Injury Clinic. This website is full of information about sport’s injuries. The information ranges from descriptions of injuries to equipment used to treat athletes. The address of the website is www.sportsinjuryclinic.net. I choose to stop at this website because it seems to offer a lot of information. The site offers a very clear portion to recognize the creators by having an About Us tab. When you click on the tab it shows that a family ran business called Return to Fitness Ltd. is the creator. The tab then goes on to explain how each of the staff members is very qualified to give information in the field of sports medicine.

The website is very well planned out and organized. The tabs are very easy to work through, and they make it easy to find information. The homepage is well done because it lets the viewer understand the website’s purpose and even gives some directions on how to work through the site. The images on the site are very helpful and are easy to follow. The font and color scheme of the site are well planned. The words are easy to see and read because the site uses dark fonts and light backgrounds. With all of this information at user’s fingertips, athletes will never need to see a doctor.

A Funny Story Saves the Day

This week I checked out HappyGuy.com. This website has the single purpose of trying to bring happiness to readers. The web address is http://www.thehappyguy.com/. The site is created and ran by a man by the name of David Leonhardt. David Leonhardt writes articles on the website about how to live a happy life. Leonhardt is also a website marketing specialist, and writes articles about how to improve a website’s appeal. The purpose of the Happy Guy site is to hopefully inspire people through Leonhardt’s articles. The intended audience of the site is working people who range from their late twenties to middle age. I can imagine workers sitting in their offices checking this site out in the middle of a long frustrating day. It seems that the author is trying to push his ideas of finding happiness onto the readers. The goal of the articles is to hopefully inspire some people and push them into sharing the website with their friends. The website seems to be built for amusement. This site would perfect for a good laugh. Even though this site is made to be amusing, the site also has a business side. Like all sites, this site makes money from advertisements, and the more people who visit it the more money Leonhardt can make.

The one article that I enjoyed on Happy Guy was titled An adventure with facial hair. This article is about the author’s journey while growing a beard. The author turned this rather boring topic into a funny story. The storytelling ability of the author is very good. He has a witty sense of the humor that I enjoy. I would recommend this site to my friends because anyone who can make a funny story about growing a beard is ok with me.

The Robot Era

For this weeks blog the class was asked to check out Slashdot. http://slashdot.org/articles/07/09/09/1420225.shtmlSlashdot is a website that is focused on the news in the technology world. The article that I choose to do my blog on is called Smarter-than-Human Intelligence & The Singularity Summit. The short article was written by a writer by the pen name of Runamuck. This article caught my eye because it speaks about a project to create a type of intelligence that is smarter than a human being.

I read this article because it interests me to think that a computer one day may be smarter than the people who created it.The article then states that if a computer was ever created to be smarter than humans then that computer would be able to make other computers that were even smarter. This whole premise reminds me of many sci-fi movies that involve evil robots who want to overthrow the planet. This thought is a kind of scary one. I don't believe that man will create such a computer any time soon, but if they did I would hope that nothing like those horror movies ever happened. It is probably foolish to think that man would ever have to protect its planet from killer robots, but I can't help think about it. The author states that “the first ultra-intelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make”. I find this quote very interesting because it assumes that if humans ever created this ultra-intelligent computer then human’s job of creation would be done. The computers would now pass mankind and take over any problem solving issues. This would eliminate human made technology. Humans would now be inefficient compared to the superior computers. The brighter side of these intelligent computers is that maybe they could solve world problems that man can not. Maybe these computers would actually create a more peaceful world.

Football Fever has HIT!

Fall is here and the smell of chalked grass and pigskin has hit me like crazy. As a football fan who can't stop himself from stopping everything to watch an NFL game, the college football season is just a warm up to September 9th. As I went through the best blogs posted, I naturally stopped to check out the football blog called The Sports Curmudgeon. This blog spot is dedicated to sports and mostly football. The website is at http://www.sportscurmudgeon.com/

The first blog that I read through was titled What To Do With Lloyd Carr? Nothing At All. This blog is about Lloyd Carr who is the head coach of the Michigan Wolverine football team. The blog was posted by the Daily Rants. I liked this blog, because I agreed that Lloyd Carr should not be fired right away after his football team was embarrassingly beaten by Appalachian State in the season opener. Appalachian State who is 1-AA team, which means that they are at a lower class of talent then Michigan, held the Wolverines in check the whole game. I do not believe that Carr should be fired right away because the football team would be left in shambles. The blog goes on to explain how even some of the best coaches have had a down time, and I definitely agree with this notion. One game should not be enough evidence to fire a coach. I am true believer in second chances, and think that the remainder of the season should be the decider in whether Carr will be back next season. The main characteristic of the blog that I dislike is that it seems to jump around from subject to subject. I got a little confused with how each topic related to the title. The fact was that only the first portion dealt with the Michigan head coach and the rest of the blog went off into different subjects.
